About Westport

Westport, County Mayo is a designated Heritage Town and was recently awarded the prestigious National Tidy Towns title. The charming Quay area is just a few minutes form the town centre and possesses a unique character of its own with pubs, restaurants and hotels now occupying the old coastguard station and warehouses.

As you would expect of one of Ireland's premier tourist destinations, Westport boasts a wide variety of attractions. One of the few planned towns in Ireland, it was designed in the 18th Century by James Wyatt, with many outstanding features, most notably the beautiful and unique boulevard known as The Mall, running parallel to the Carrowbeg River.

The town's attractions include the famous Westport House & Country Estate, which is one of Ireland's top day visitor attractions and is featured in more detail on our website. A fine Georgian mansion, home of Lord Sligo.

Westport's proximity to Ireland's holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, and the shores of the ever tranquil Clew Bay make it a superb location for those wishing to combine wonderful scenery with the stories and legend of a remarkable history.

The Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick Heritage Centres are excellent sources of information on this history as is the National Museum of Ireland - County Life, which is situated just outside the nearby town of Castlebar.

Why film in Westport?

In April, 2004, 70 crew members and 35 extras took over the streets of Westport, turning heads, creating an electric buzz in the town and literally stopping traffic as they filmed ‘Pat’s Bar’, the second advert in the current campaign entitled ‘Knowing what matters’.

Guinness were adamant that they would film to film the advertisement in a town, not a city. They wanted it to look real and wanted to take the practical limitations into account, it would be difficult to give the appearance of walking out of a pub and straight out of a town in a city. They were looking for the pied piper effect from the ad,”

Furthermore, the company were interested in filming in a picturesque town and after looking at a few, they decided that Westport was the obvious choice. Having spoken to local authorities in the town, including Peter Hynes, Director of Services with Westport Town Council, they felt that their decision came easy, as everyone they dealt with was extremely supportive. “It just makes everything a lot easier when there’s a welcoming mind set in a town and Mr Hynes certainly reflected that. It was a very positive environment to work in, even when we had to stop traffic, the Gardaí were so co-operative and the crew were all treated so well,”

Damien Devaney of WHPR, the Public Relations Company that dealt with the advertising campaign.
